O'Grady is a native of Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of Jan and Jim O'Grady, a financial planner. She was raised by her parents in Wheaton within Illinois and was graduated in 1981, with a degree from the Wheaton North High School. She was a part of a couple of commercials for television before moving from Illinois to Los Angeles. The first time she worked, O'Grady was an Montgomery Ward model, where she also made several commercials. She first appeared on screen in 1988 in the romantic comedy she's Having a Baby. She was then offered an actress in the recurring role of ABC Drama China Beach opposite Dana Delany. In addition to guest-starring on various shows, and in independent films as well as TV-produced films in addition, she was the main character in several television programs. Donna Abandando played her first lead role in ABC's NYPD Blue the police drama. O'Grady, who played the big-haired secretary between 1993 and 1996, was awarded Emmy Award nominees each year for Outstanding Drama Series Supporting actress. She won the Screen Actors Guild Award in 1995 for outstanding performance by an ensemble of actors in a drama show.
