Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her mother and grandmother. When she was a young girl she was suffering from an obsessive compulsive disorder and suffered anxiety linked to the word association. Ford's interest in acting began as a child. She joined the National Youth Theatre. She was accepted into Sylvia Young Theatre School but after just one week she realized that she was not a fit. Ford later applied to be a student for the Central School of Speech and Drama and received an acceptance on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler as a regular character on Doctor Who. Ford's first appearance on television was an episode in 1991 called Surgical Spirit. By the time she graduated, Ford already went by "Catherine Tate". Tate appeared in television shows like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London Burning. Also, she was a regular performer in theatres, before eventually becoming a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. Tate's stand-up comedy style that she started adding to her set in 1996, soon gained the attention of her peers.
